HANDS FREE WEEKLY INTENTION

Envision Future Relationships

A vital component to creating a sustainable Hands Free life was setting aside ten minutes each day for personal reflection. During this uninterrupted quiet time, I read a daily devotional or prayed. It was in those quiet moments that I experienced divine whispers about how I should spend my time. I began to see the big picture — a glimpse of what I hoped my future relationship with my children would look like. But to get a handle on my overscheduled life, I had to face some difficult truths. I realized that if I continued to invest the bulk of my time and attention outside of my family, my grown children would be strangers to me. But if I replaced hours of doing with moments of being, my children’s recollection of their childhood might be something like this:

The way my mom treated me let me know I was a priority in her life. She looked at me when we talked. She was never too busy to listen to what I had to say. I turned to her when I had a problem or when I had good news to share. I loved to tell my mom things because she really listened — listened with her eyes, heart, and soul. And now she is still the person I want to talk to when I have something to ask or share.

This week, set aside ten to fifteen minutes a day for prayerful reflection. Consider the pace of your life and where you are investing your limited time and energies. If you find it helpful, use a notepad or journal to reflect on questions like these:

• Does the amount of time and attention I currently offer to my child convey that he or she is a top priority in my life? Where do I invest the bulk of my time and energies? Are these activities fulfilling to me?

• Does my current schedule allow for time spent simply being with my child? Do I have any extracurricular commitments or time-wasting distractions that I could eliminate in order to spend a few minutes of special time each day with my child?
